Auto Mechanic School

Objective: To train skilled automotive technicians capable of diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing vehicles, addressing a critical need for qualified mechanics in Rwanda's growing transportation sector.


Curriculum Focus:

  • Automotive Fundamentals & Safety: Introduction to vehicle systems, workshop safety procedures, proper tool usage, and basic vehicle maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks). This lays the groundwork for all subsequent modules.

  • Engine Systems: Comprehensive understanding of internal combustion engines (gasoline and diesel), including their components (e.g., pistons, crankshafts, valves), operation principles, lubrication, and cooling systems. This would cover diagnosis and repair of common engine issues.

  • Electrical/Electronic Systems: In-depth training on vehicle electrical circuits, wiring diagrams, battery, starting, and charging systems. 

  • Transmission & Drivetrain Systems: Understanding and servicing manual and automatic transmissions/transaxles, clutches, drive shafts, differentials, and axles. This includes diagnosis of transmission problems and basic repair.

  • Braking Systems: Focus on hydraulic brake systems (disc and drum), anti-lock braking systems (ABS), traction control, and stability control systems. Students would learn to inspect, maintain, and repair all brake components.

  • Steering & Suspension Systems: Principles of vehicle steering and suspension geometry. Training on components like shock absorbers, struts, springs, control arms, steering gears, and power steering systems. This would include wheel alignment and tire service.

  • Diagnostics & Troubleshooting: A heavy emphasis on systematic diagnostic processes, using specialized diagnostic tools, reading technical manuals, and interpreting diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) to identify vehicle faults efficiently.

Hands-on Experience: Students would spend a significant portion of their time in a well-equipped auto workshop, working on real vehicles (donated or practice vehicles). This would involve disassembling and reassembling engines, performing brake jobs, diagnosing electrical faults, and conducting routine maintenance.


Tool Proficiency: Extensive training in the safe and effective use of a wide range of automotive hand tools, power tools, specialized diagnostic equipment (e.g., scan tools, multimeters, oscilloscopes), and shop equipment (e.g., lifts, tire changers).


Safety & Professionalism: Strict adherence to automotive workshop safety protocols, including hazardous material handling and proper vehicle lifting techniques. Emphasis on professionalism, customer service, and ethical repair practices.
